Kubuntu Developer Feedback

  • Frameworks 5.29 delayed due to compile issues on Launchpad
  • KDevelop and Krita synced with Debian
  • Waiting on Qt 5.7.1 to land in Zesty before we can ship a KDE Applications version greater than 16.04.3 due to some PIM parts depending on QtWebEngine, which is a new package coming to the Ubuntu archive along with 5.7.1. We are currently seeing if we can do a partial upload with the applications that DON’T depend on QtWebEngine so we can at least ship some newer applications
  • KDE Plasma 5.8.5 is also shipped, with an upstream fix fixing a regression in which the Save dialog appears as an Open dialog, fix in the upstream tarball as of 5.8.6 and 5.9.0

BIG SHOUT OUT to Linode for working with us!

Kubuntu Developer Feedback

  • Linode Server – 1 x LXD Containers for other to use
    • 1 Container being used by one of the packagers
    • 2 A KCI Slave node
    • With this resource we can build one tree level dependency at once, which is around 100 packages, which takes around 1 hr on average.
    • There is also enough capacity left that we can provide additional containers for Ninja’s to use packaging.
  • For Yakkety, we now have QT 5.6.1, and we got Frameworks and Plasma 5.7.2 and for applications 16.04.3 almost done for Yakkety, and were looking for testers. The team are looking forward to applications 16.08, just hoping for an upstream release to get the PIM packages.
  • For Xenial Plasma 5.7.2 has move a little further forward, but there is much to be done in backports to achieve this.
  • Kubuntu CI System – Yofel has been working hard on improving the CI system, in addition to adding Slave Nodes, thanks to Linode too.
    • The next stage was to get the Build jobs in order, this has meant we have dropped 32bit builds from the CI, but we’ll continue to provide x86 32bit builds of Kubuntu.Focusing on only 64bit builds has resolved many of errors and fails.
    • They did run into an interesting error, where the Linode slave was so powerful it tried to open 20 concurrent connections to the KDE Git repo, and was promptly closed off by the 5 connection limit. A nice problem to have.
  • Yofel will continue to work on the Stable CI builds, by getting a set of working configurations. The move back to Launchpad brings many benefits but right now its created a lot of challenges, that the team are working through.
  • 2 additional Ninja’s have been added to the Team:
    • Rik Mills
    • Simon Quigly
  • Clivejo put a big shout out to the 2 new Ninja’s, many thanks for excellent work and effort.
  • As always we’re desperate for daily build and beta builds of Yakkety

Listener Feedback

From Jim:

Hi guys, it was very exciting to watch this podcast, you answered some questions I had myself wondering, like your opinion about kde-neon project. Some notes for the next podcast:

1) A chat room is needed, to be able to send you questions. Could it be possible to setup one that it is connected to the stream (more or less like twitch tv or youtube live style). Although I love the irc channel! 🙂

2) Talking about gaming is awesome. The reason is that target audience for Linux is a bit low at the moment (last I heard like 2% on Steam) but it can only grow, especially if the support for drivers, hardware and special effects gets better. Already some very awesome games are ported to Linux too and wine has very good support on many other.

3) Could we discuss about the needs for documentation, forum improvements and moderation, and how else the community could help and where that information could be shared so we get some startup hands-on, actively assisting?

4) Lastly does anyone have an idea of a DVD label/cover for Kubuntu 16.04? :)) I was trying to make one but why not have a contest for it?

Thanks for been awesome,

Cheers, Jim

Your Feedback

From Carlen Cagle:

Can’t wait! Ladies and gents if, for some strange (aka: obviously obscure) reason, you are NOT paying attention to the fine fellows and their WHIMSICALLY FANTASTIC KUBUNTU WORLD TOUR, you are missing out on

(A) Formidable information that allows you to perform that subverted S&M fantasy where you dominate your computer and it serves you well knowing that you will “Crack the whip” (aka: open the command-line) and wreak sheer terror down on their digital backsides and

(B) the best people throwing the greatest virtual party in the binary world. Long and short, the Kubuntu Podcast team absolutely and unequivocally KNOW what they are doing, willingly shares the wisdom and insights with you and, finally, cares about you, your use of Kubuntu, and your success in integrating the “Kubuntu mentality” that makes you not want member of a community but a brother/sister in a movement.

From Ana Belen Rangnau:

Hi! My name is Ana. I tell you that I study in college. I’m doing a degree career in systems. I am a big fan of Kubuntu it is excellent, I love it and I am a follower of this. I’m not enough words to express how wonderful they are! Thank you for existing, make me very happy!

It might be possible to send me some free stickers? or any gift as a T-Shirt, keychain, magnets, posters, bracelet, hat, pin, etc. or any other you have, would be wonderful to have some of you and honored to wear anything that has your logo,of course if you send me stickers that would stick in my laptop! would be delighted with the opportunity to advertise you in my university.

Unfortunately in the town where I live there is this sort of thing. Of course if you send me something I will send pictures! Well I hope you can understand me, I use a translator.

[…](postal address)

From already thank you very much for everything! thank you for your consideration and your time! Keep it up! are the best in the world! best regards from a big fan and admirer.

From James:

No doubt – a HUGE THANK YOU to Scarlett and Philip in getting this thing out the proverbial door while being understaffed and under the gun of a hard date-driven deadline. Right now I can’t help much but all I could think to do was join Scarlet’s Patreon account. It’s not much but if everyone did that just think what the world would be like 😉 Anyway I know everyone needs all the encouragement they can get right now and I’m sending good vibes to all the hard working people who help make Kubuntu possible. You all are what the community is. And community is awesome.

Cheers,

James aka ronnoc

From Dale Trombley:

Often the tribulations and trials of the devs go unthanked. Please share this story for the kubuntu devs in the 16.04 cycle.

I lost my father on thursday. on sunday I was trying to go on with life and upgraded one of our many trusty lts to 16.04 lts. It went completely flawless. no errors no hiccups. You guys (and gals) did a fantastic release (IMO) and I want to thank you. That for those few minutes in time my mind was occupied on the upgrade, and relief that all had gone well.

Thank you.

Hello,

I use kubuntu 15.04 – 15.10 now for several months and had tried before ubuntu (unity), opensuse, elementary OS, debian during the last 4 years.

You have done a great job, for me KDE Plasma 5 with ubuntu is the most beautiful, user friendly computing ever since i started in 1990 with Dos 4.0 an a 286er intel computer.

I really estimate your efforts and hope you carry on.

Here’s a snippet of his interview:

<ovidiu-florin> clivejo: what would you do to improve Kubuntu? What’s your idea for doing things better?
<clivejo> I want to help get KDE software into the Ubuntu ecosystem faster and make it easier on the people who do it
<clivejo> people like yofel and sgclark have put a LOT of their time into it, if I can take a little bit of that pressure off them, thats my goal

The Kubuntu team would like to offer him a warm welcome, and we’re greeting him with hugs and work to be done.

For those interested here’s Clive’s wiki page: https://wiki.kubuntu.org/~clivejo

The interview meeting didn’t even finish, and Clive was already back to work. Thank you Clive for joining us.

The meeting log is available here.
