Beyond Ubuntu long-term support: introducing KDE's LTS software to Kubuntu 26.04 LTS

Kubuntu 26.04 LTS is now arguably the world’s most reliable KDE-powered LTS Linux distribution, thanks to the Bullet-Proof KDE Software Initiative. This provides KDE bug fixes and security updates for the duration of the Kubuntu 26.04 LTS lifecycle.
Teams from Kubuntu, KDE, Techpaladin Software, and Kubuntu Focus work together to identify and fix real-world bugs and security issues to provide the best possible user experience. Unlike previous Plasma LTS versions, this work includes the entire software stack: KDE Frameworks libraries, the Plasma 6.6 LTS desktop, and KDE applications. Furthermore, any changes are coordinated with Kubuntu system libraries and tested on CI systems running Kubuntu 26.04 LTS.
This work has been ongoing since May 2026, and there are already significant results. If you’re running Kubuntu 26.04 LTS, you will see that desktop themes support embedded widgets, a media frame widget now always shows crisp scaled images, desktop files no longer disappear when renaming them while using activities, remote desktop tools now just work, and desktop configuration works more reliably, just to name a few.
This initiative was started and funded by our hardware partner, Kubuntu Focus, with a total commitment over $100K. If you’re ready to use a desktop designed for professionals and organizations that require stability and reliability, you can explore their systems here.
