Flatpaks and Kubuntu https://kubuntu.org/news/flatpaks-and-kubuntu/ Sun, 26 Feb 2023 21:48:35 +0000 https://kubuntu.org/?p=5012 Kubuntu is and has always been “Ubuntu” combined with the greatest software from the KDE Community. Prior to 23.04 and aligned with Debian packaging, Flatpak and Snap package sources were included as installable options with each source requiring its own set of commands and repositories. However, enabling both sources caused confusion with new users (and *Ubuntu support groups) as the user was unsure about several issues including which or how their packages were installed; the proper place to report issues; and/or how to remove them. As a result, Canonical, Ubuntu’s parent company, and the Ubuntu Technical Board have chosen to support Snaps only upon initial install.

User and community member, arraybolt3, provides more details regarding challenges of Flatpak support.

No worries; Flatpaks are still available for all Ubuntu flavors. To enable Flatpaks in KDE’s Discover in Kubuntu 23.04, run this command:

sudo apt install flatpak plasma-discover-backend-flatpak

To enable the largest Flatpak repository, run this command:

flatpak remote-add --if-not-exists flathub https://flathub.org/repo/flathub.flatpakrepo

Log out and log back in (or restart) to re-initialize the XDG_DATA_DIRS variable, otherwise, newly installed Flatpak apps will not run or appear in the startup menu.

Plasma 5.24.3 available on Kubuntu 21.10 https://kubuntu.org/news/plasma-5-24-3-available-on-kubuntu-21-10/ Wed, 09 Mar 2022 13:15:13 +0000 https://kubuntu.org/?p=4839 We are pleased to announce that Plasma 5.24.3 is now available in our backports PPA for Kubuntu 21.10 (Impish Indri).

The release announcement detailing the new features and improvements in Plasma 5.24.3 can be found here.

To upgrade:

Add the following repository to your software sources list:

ppa:kubuntu-ppa/backports

or if it is already added, the updates should become available via your preferred update method.

The PPA can be added manually in the Konsole terminal with the command:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:kubuntu-ppa/backports

and packages then updated with

sudo apt full-upgrade

IMPORTANT

Please note that more bugfix releases are scheduled by KDE for Plasma 5.24, so while we feel these backports will be beneficial to enthusiastic adopters, users wanting to use a Plasma release with more rounds of stabilisation/bugfixes ‘baked in’ may find it advisable to stay with Plasma 5.22 as included in the original 21.10 (Impish Indri) release.

The Kubuntu Backports PPA for 21.10 also currently contains newer versions of KDE Gear (formerly Applications) and other KDE software. The PPA will also continue to receive updated versions of KDE packages other than Plasma, for example KDE Frameworks.

Issues with Plasma itself can be reported on the KDE bugtracker [1]. In the case of packaging or other issues, please provide feedback on our mailing list [2], IRC [3], and/or file a bug against our PPA packages [4].

Kubuntu and Linux Mint doing Plasma 5.8 testing https://kubuntu.org/news/kubuntu-and-linux-mint-doing-plasma-5-8-testing/ Sun, 11 Dec 2016 15:02:41 +0000 http://kubuntu.org/?p=3017 Since Linux Mint 18 KDE uses the Kubuntu Backports we both thought it would be very productive if we asked both our users to help test our work, bring Plasma 5.8 to both Xenial and Yakkety. This update will also bring updated Frameworks 5.28 and Applications 16.04.3 so your favorite applications like Dolphin, Konsole, Kate will be updated with fixes, new features.

You should have some command line knowledge before testing.
Having a quick read about how to use ppa purge is also a big plus

How to test Plasma 5.8
Plasma 5.8.4 is currently in the Kubuntu Backports Landing PPA.

If your currently on Kubuntu 16.04.1 or 16.10 you can add this ppa with Konsole:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:kubuntu-ppa/backports-landing

Then update:
sudo apt update

Once that is complete:
sudo apt dist-upgrade

Once everything is done you can reboot.

Listener Feedback

  • From: Snowhog @ https://www.kubuntuforums.net/

I just want to express my thanks for all the hard work developers and testers put into the Kubuntu/KDE/Plasma projects. So few of you; so many of us, and the “us’s” always seem to want ‘more’, and tend to, more often than not, complain about what isn’t included and what isn’t working instead of praising that which is and does.

For me, and with very few exceptions since I first started using Kubuntu in 2007, Kubuntu has simply just worked. I am constantly amazed that such a robust and feature filled operating system is available to everyone for free (free to me). The developers and testers simply don’t receive the credit and gratitude you all have earned.

So, again, from one of the “us’s”, THANK YOU!

Please feel free to pass this along.
